Ninth Island Pinot Noir is produced by Piper's Brook Winery (Kreglinger Wine Estates) of Tasmania, and imported by American Estates Wines. Tasmania is the large island just off the southeastern tip of the continent (due south of Melbourne), and it is cool there.

89.5 points. The color is deep bright ruby. This is a jammy/perfumed Pinot Noir, with cherry, lemon and orange rind, cassia, clove, rosemary and sage aromas. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied with silky tannins, and the flavors are tart cherry and citrus plus evolving spice. The fruit-filled finish is dry and tart. I tasted it by itself, then with a grilled Tuna and Ribeye Steak Salad. The closure is a genuine cork. (A screw cap would be better.) The $19 Nashville price has lots of competition. However, this is an excellent value, because the cool Tasmanian weather and early bottling gives it unique character (somewhat more herbal and lively) - it's worth seeking out. |

Nice write up.
I'm surprised this is under cork. I think they tend to do that more for export markets. Here in Tassie it's screwcaps all the way!
Tasmania is a cool climate but I've never been snowed on here, for example.

Everything I drank in Tasmania for 6 months was good and inexpensive or for you wine folks, when you factor in the price it's very good wine. Some over there at $6.00 american was absolutely outstanding.
It was told to me, urban legand or not, that Tasminai, because of it's cool climate, has the only original european vines left in Australia.
