Schug Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2004

Schug Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is Schug Winery's lower priced Chardonnay, produced from Carneros Estate (67%) and southern Sonoma Valley (33%) grapes.  Schug's delicate handling and winemaking techniques are employed.

Schug Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2004 The amount of oak influence is much lighter than with Schug's more expensive Chardonnays. This bottling was approximately 1/2 fermented in oak casks, and 1/2 in cold stainless steel. Aging was sur lie in large neutral oak casks. Production: 4350 cases.

90 points. Color: Light lemony straw. The aromas are restrained, showing pear, lemon and a hint of cold butter. The mouthfeel has nice body and structure, plus a somewhat creamy texture. The flavors are tart and citrusy, in line with the aromas. The finish is clean, not at all sweet, releasing fruit and light buttery nuances as it lingers.

Closure: Artificial plastic composite "cork". (A screw cap would be a plus.)

Price: $15 (Nashville). Value: Excellent.
