Rex Goliath 47 Pound Rooster Pinot Grigio 2004
On October 17, 2005, Constellation Brands, who could now be described as the "847 Pound Rooster" in the wine business, announced it purchased the Rex Goliath 47 Pound Rooster Brand from Hahn Estates. The 47 Pound Rooster label sold more than 300,000 cases in 2004, after launching two years before. The label artwork features a 47 pound rooster, billed as the world's largest in turn of the (19th to 20th) century Texas circuses. "HRM" stands for "His Royal Majesty".

The 100% varietal grapes for Rex Goliath Pinot Grigio 2004 were harvested and fermented before the buyout was completed. The source of the grapes was Monterey and San Francisco Bay. Mike Kafka is listed as current Winemaker for Rex Goliath, but Adam LaZarre was responsible for this and other Rex Goliath wines developed and produced at Hahn. It appears LaZarre remains at Hahn Estates.
Tasting Notes: Color: Pale straw. Light apricot, honeysuckle, and rocky mineral aromas lead to a very light mouthfeel, with mild acidity. Minerally lime, pear and apricot flavors finish crisp, dry and refreshing. |
Closure: Real cork. Very nice value ($9).

Nice article! I am enjoying a glass of 2006 47 Pound Rooster right now. alas, no more real cork in my bottle. I liked your review and linked you on my blog ;) I really love the crisp dry flavor of this wine and how it refreshes your taste buds with a nice cheese and salty meat. Complements each other perfectly!
