The story with Pinot Blanc is that it can make a refreshing, rainwater-clean white with tropical overtones. Like this Valley of the Moon*, which has plenty of tropical character in a lean refreshing frame.
Pinot Blanc is a genetic mutation of Pinot Grigio, which in turn is a mutation of Pinot Noir. Pinot Blanc looks a lot like Chardonnay, but usually is expected to have less aroma when made into wine.
Valley of the Moon Pinot Blanc 2005 was fermented in stainless, but then received a few months of French oak. The fruit was sourced from Russian River Valley and southern Sonoma Valley.
Tasting Notes: Color: Pale straw, with a greenish tint. Aromas: Juicy melon, banana, and limey citrus. Light-bodied, round as rainwater, the tart citrus and juicy fruity flavors are crisp and palate cleansing.
Closure: Artificial "neocork". Excellent value ($10). Alcohol content: 13.5%.
