Sockeye Australian Pinot Noir 2004

In Nashville you don't get a lot of choices in Australian Pinot Noir.  Here's a good one from a very modern Seattle-based negociant, Andrew Browne (Precept Brands*), who's very much on top on things.

Sockeye Australian Pinot Noir 2004

When it comes to Salmon and Salmon wine, two beloved staples in my diet, I'm always looking for just enough of a different personality to break out of the everyday routine.  This Pinot does it for a reasonable price.

Last year's was sourced from Oregon, but 2004 Sockeye Pinot Noir came from South Eastern Australia, and is 100% varietal.

Tasting Notes: Color: Medium ruby translucent.  Aromas: Ripe strawberry, raspberry, clove and nutmeg spice and fresh basil.  A lightweight red, mildly tannic and dusty dry, the tart cherry, clove, citrus rind and tea flavors are well integrated and there is complexity despite the lightness.

Closure: Real cork.  Very nice value ($15).  Alcohol content: 13.5%.

Food pairing: What else? Grilled herb, pepper and mustard marinated flank steak.  Or wild salmon (on a cedar plank?).

*Precept Brands produces popular wines from Washington, California, Australia and New Zealand.  I've noticed several of Precept's labels have received prime display and marketing in Total Wine & More stores, including Fauna New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and Washington Hills Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet.
