Not all Cabernet Sauvignon is as buttoned down as a Brooks Brothers shirt. Notorious is more about the good stuff and less about the "stuffy".

Founder Tobin James is a notoriously warm and friendly guy and enjoys playing the celebrity role. For ten years now Lance and Claire Silver have been his down-to-earth business partners in the winery. Together, this "James Gang" can be counted on to deliver bold reds that don't hold back or look back.
Tobin James Cellars is a popular destination in Paso Robles and their wine club called the "James Gang" is a big noise as well. It seems there are a lot of hedonistic wine lovers with a taste for the "bodacious" when it comes to wine.
Notorious Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 is a blend of fruit from 5 Paso Robles vineyards, including an 80-year-old dry farmed vineyard, a steep sunny hillside vineyard, and a limestone vineyard. The lots were kept separate until blending. Each underwent cold soak fermentation and each was aged in the neighborhood of 18 months in American and French oak barrels. Cases produced: 3600.
Tasting Notes: Appearance: Purple cranberry translucent. Aromas: Black and red currant, plum, cedary oak, caramel and cinnamon. Tart and medium-bodied on the tongue with an adolescent musculature, the fruit is ripe and jammy. There's plenty of oak flavor and a measure of warm cinnamon roll as the lightly gripping young finish lets go.
Excellent value: $14. Closure: Real cork. Alcohol content: 14.8%.
Winewaves reviewed Tobin James Ballistic Zinfandel 2004 in December 2006.
